Community leaders demand action to protect popular biking trails

Mountain biking trails in St. George are under threat, according to local advocate Lucas Brinkerhoff, who spoke passionately at the St. George City Council meeting on December 5, 2024. Representing the Trail Alliance in Southern Utah, Brinkerhoff, also known as \"Moose,\" highlighted the significant loss of public space for mountain bikers, particularly the popular Bear Claw Poppy Trail, which attracts around 100,000 users annually, including many from outside the area.

Brinkerhoff urged the city to form a committee to collaborate with local biking groups to address these concerns, regardless of the ongoing discussions about the Northern Quarter Highway. He emphasized the economic benefits that the trails bring to the community, especially during holiday seasons when visitors flock to St. George for outdoor activities.

In a related discussion, resident Bob Klarich raised safety concerns regarding traffic management in Sun River, particularly at a newly installed four-way stop. He noted that many older residents struggle with traffic signals and stop signs, leading to dangerous situations for pedestrians and cyclists. Klarich requested the city reconsider additional safety measures to protect vulnerable road users.
