Town finances surge with record revenue and new projects

During the Guilford County Town Council meeting on December 5, 2024, a significant financial update highlighted the town's robust revenue growth and strategic budget adjustments. The council reported an impressive 18.4% increase in general fund revenues, totaling $2.9 million, largely driven by a surge in property tax collections due to rising property valuations.

The property tax revenue, the town's largest income source, saw a 4.7% increase, attributed to a $75 million rise in property values. Additionally, unrestricted intergovernmental revenues rose by 3%, bolstered by increases in ABC distributions and beer and wine excise taxes. Notably, restricted intergovernmental revenues surged to $300,000, thanks to grant funds for a water tank project and park improvements.

Expenditures also reflected a strategic focus on capital projects, particularly in culture and recreation, which saw a dramatic increase from $705,000 to $1.46 million. In addition to financial discussions, the council addressed a text amendment to streamline the planning and zoning process. This amendment allows the council to appoint members to the planning and zoning board, effectively merging it with the Board of Adjustment to improve efficiency and reduce staffing challenges. The council emphasized that this change would maintain clear separations of duties, ensuring that members would not hear their own appeals.
