Walled Lake faces critical shortage of substitute teachers

In a recent Walled Lake Consolidated School District Board of Education meeting, a pressing issue emerged that resonated with many in the community: the need for increased pay for substitute teachers. \"Substitutes are finding it increasingly difficult to secure jobs in Walled Lake due to our lower pay rates,\" the speaker noted, emphasizing that Walled Lake offers the least competitive compensation in the area, second only to Huron Valley. This disparity has led to a significant number of job openings within the district, with 98 positions currently unfilled, including 43 paraeducator roles that have been vacant since January 2023.
