City representatives reported that work is moving forward on the Saint John Street Neighborhood Memorial Park, which the mayor described as a $1,200,000 effort to honor Black and immigrant families displaced when the neighborhood was demolished in the early 1970s for I-475. "Construction is moving forward on Flint's new Saint John Street Neighborhood Memorial Park, a $1,200,000 project honoring the black and immigrant families who called the neighborhood home," a presenter said.
Project updates noted that the walking path and historically themed playground are already complete; crews poured concrete for new sidewalks and continued work on a 50-by-70-foot pavilion during the visit. Former Saint John Street neighborhood residents were on-site to celebrate the progress, and city officials said the park is intended to preserve neighborhood history while creating space for families and educational programs.
