Carolyn McLeod, a member of the Council on Aging and host of the program, opened the episode by introducing SHINE counselor Bill LaPrade and asking what seniors should know about the annual enrollment window.
"That starts on October 15, ends on December 7," LaPrade said, explaining that the open enrollment period lets people enroll in or switch Medicare Advantage plans, move from an Advantage plan to a Medigap plan, or change their drug plan.
LaPrade emphasized planning ahead: he recommended people make appointments with a SHINE counselor and arrive with a list of current prescriptions and preferred pharmacies. He said SHINE counseling is free and ‘‘an unbiased way of looking at all the plans available to you.’’
Why it matters: plan details change every year and switching without checking a doctor’s network or prescription coverage can leave beneficiaries with unexpected costs or interrupted care. LaPrade recommended checking with a doctor before switching Advantage plans and using the Medicare Plan Finder to compare costs if able.
Local next steps: LaPrade said SHINE appointments typically last about an hour for single people and 90 minutes for couples, and that Westborough residents can call the senior center to schedule time with a counselor.
