Commissioner Taylor and staff outlined an application to the New Jersey Urban Enterprise Zone Authority for up to $392,250 to install surveillance cameras and support equipment in the Millville UEZ as part of downtown safety and economic-development work.
Taylor said the plan includes five fixed cameras and two mobile units that could be redeployed for events and that the units will be clearly branded as city police cameras. "These these are not AI," Taylor said, responding to concerns about facial recognition and automated profiling. Staff said the cameras will offer security-zone programming (alerts on motion in specified areas) but will not perform facial identification; the police department will write strict SOPs for use, access and retention.
Commissioners discussed signage for High Street and the mobility of units for events such as Lakeside Firework Night. Taylor thanked staff and external vendors and said the grant-required application and procurement steps are underway. No formal award was made during the work session; the resolution authorizes pursuing the grant application to the state authority.
