Two candidates for Vermont state auditor outlined contrasting visions for the office at a Town Meeting TV forum ahead of the Nov. 3, 2026 general election. Moderator Matthew Smith introduced Republican Ivar Kronick and Democrat Tim Ash and laid out a format of brief answers, a lightning round and closing statements.
Kronick framed his campaign as a return to statutory financial audits and tighter scrutiny of high‑risk federal awards, saying, “While the state budget is growing by $500,000,000 a year, major areas of spending are escaping scrutiny.” Ash emphasized improving government results and targeting audits to programs that affect Vermonters’ daily lives, saying the recent period has seen the state budget grow 50% while property taxes rose 40%.
The candidates repeatedly contrasted approaches: Kronick advocated narrower, tougher financial audits and publicizing agency failures; Ash said the office should use data tools, plain‑language reporting and close coordination with the governor and legislature to secure follow‑through. Both said the auditor should avoid acting as a legislator; both also agreed there are programs that merit prioritized audits.
