Pavan Prasad, junior engineer with the City of Fairfield Public Works Department, said the city contracted with VSS International to resurface “approximately 18 miles of road within Rancho Salano,” including Rancho Salano Parkway and nearby residential streets.
Prasad described the work as an asphalt rubber cape seal applied in two layers. “This treatment involves putting down 2 layers, a chip seal, which has a rough protective layer, and microsurfacing, which smoothens the road and seals the surface to extend the life of the pavement,” he said. The project begins with preparatory repairs, including removing and replacing damaged asphalt sections (commonly called dig outs) and replacing about 17 curb ramps along Rancho Salano Parkway.
The chip-seal step involves spraying an asphalt binder onto the existing pavement, spreading crushed stone or aggregate, and rolling the material to lock it in place. Prasad said the chip-sealed surface is drivable almost immediately, so there will be no permanent driveway access restrictions during that phase, but residents should expect minor traffic impacts while crews work.
After the chip seal settles — Prasad said crews expect the roadway to need about one to two weeks to stabilize — a microsurface layer will be applied to seal and smooth the surface. Once the micro surface is applied, “traffic must stay off the road for approximately 2 to 4 hours,” he said. During the curing period between layers, street sweepers will clear any loose aggregate.
The city will publish weekly updated maps on the project web page so residents can plan around active work zones. If weather or other unforeseen issues force rescheduling, residents will receive a 48-hour notice before the revised start date. Contractors will restripe and repaint pavement markings to complete the project.
