Residents asked whether living near a 765 kV transmission corridor would present health risks and what noise levels to expect from the towers.
"The EMF levels are the most important," said a local participant, pressing the company for data on field strength and health reports. An I&M representative said studies on EMF and safety exist and that the utility would provide those materials to the public. "We can certainly get you any of those studies that, that we have out there," the representative said.
A resident relayed an extreme constituent claim about cancer risks. "There's a lot of comments I received from an individual...you might as well just plan on having cancer," Will Howard said, relaying residents' fears; the utility responded by offering to supply peer‑reviewed studies and to include health and noise information in the outreach packet.
Why it matters: Health and noise concerns are a common source of public opposition to transmission projects. The utility said it will compile and distribute relevant studies and clarify what the permitting process requires as part of route selection.
