The City Council heard emotional testimony both supporting and opposing a proposal to designate a portion of North Main Avenue as Erika Andrews Memorial Way. Luis Vázquez, executive director of the San Antonio LGBT Chamber of Commerce, urged the council to approve the memorial, saying it would preserve the history and visibility of the city’s LGBT community in a prominent corridor.
Opposition came from Jack M. Finger, who asked council members to review the city’s naming criteria and questioned whether the honoree met the code’s public-leader categories; Finger also expressed moral objections. Several family members and friends—including Lenssy Andrews, who identified herself as Erika’s daughter—spoke about Andrews’ role in the community and her cultural impact. A council member said the designation would be a commemorative name funded by District 1 at a stated cost of $5,000. Council moved the consent agenda with the item included for consideration; public commenters urged the council to approve the street-name designation.
