The Wilson County School Board voted unanimously to approve a $2.5 million change order to the Lakeview Elementary renovation after an independent roofing contractor recommended replacing decking on a problem section of the roof. Director Mayfield recommended accepting the change order and said the district has funds available to proceed.
"Their recommendation was definitely to replace the decking on that section of roof that is in need," Mayfield said, urging the board to accept the change order. Trustees also approved leasing three portable units, which Mayfield said would provide six classrooms and could arrive within about three weeks of signing the contract. Mayfield cautioned that the full renovation timeline could run up to 24 months from the start date and that contractor delays could extend that window.
Board members asked whether a repair option would save money and whether insurance might cover the work; an independent evaluator concluded replacement was necessary, and Mayfield said insurance is unlikely to pay because the damage appeared age-related. The board moved and seconded the items and approved both the change order and the portable leases by unanimous votes (4-0).
