Commission members revisited a prior sculpture proposal for a new roundabout and said engineers advised against placing a sculpture at the center because a major water main runs beneath the site. Members discussed alternative nearby locations and emphasized the city's application process for sculptures, which begins with a form submitted to staff and then review by the committee.
"We actually cannot put public art on that roundabout because there's a major intersection of a water main underneath... directly underneath the center of that roundabout," a member said. Commissioners suggested other nearby spaces might be appropriate and reminded the public that proposed sculptures should be submitted using the city's application form so the committee and staff can evaluate funding and placement.
Members also raised visibility and safety concerns for roundabout art and discussed typical mitigation (low-height plantings or non-distracting features) used in other municipalities. The commission agreed to follow up on potential alternate locations and to confirm whether an initial design stipend had been provided previously to the proposers.
