Staff presented revised concept designs for the Kids Crossing playground replacement (resolution R19026) and proposed a budget amendment to fund increased amenities. Eric (city staff) summarized public comments and said the design team had incorporated most requests, particularly more shade and a 2–5 age area.
Blake of Parkitecture described the new 2–5 structure — a dragonfly motif with interactive, climbable wings, artificial‑turf mounds (including a tunnel), expanded seating, and either poured‑in‑place rubber or artificial turf surfacing in play areas. He said the zip line is a dual track with an inclusive seat and a standard platform to accommodate a range of users. “We had a very strong nod to the natural environment throughout our theme,” Blake said, noting added inclusive elements and interpretive panels.
Commissioners and a public commenter, Mike Aladise, praised the design’s evolution and accessibility features, although some commissioners raised concerns about cost. After discussion the commission moved and approved resolution R19026 to adopt the concept designs and the associated capital budget amendment; the vote was recorded (result reported as 4 in favor, 1 opposed).
