A proposed real estate purchase with the Board of Education of Buckeye Valley Local School District for 25.81 acres on County Home Road at a price of $387,270 failed after commissioners questioned the price and historical terms.
One commissioner framed the discussion by contrasting the school board's duty to get the best price with the county's duty to protect all taxpayers. The commissioner said the county had been in discussions with Buckeye Valley for 18 to 24 months and that an earlier appraisal was approximately $350,000. He also recounted that the property had been sold in 1997 for $1 to build a school and that the prior agreement did not include a provision returning the property to the county if a school was not built. "I am obligated to vote no today," the commissioner said.
Other commissioners said the $387,270 figure was too high and voiced support for returning to the earlier appraisal number if negotiations continued. The board voted 'no' on Resolution 26-725, declining the purchase. The record shows the motion failed and no purchase authorization was adopted.
What's next: Commissioners said the county could bid on the parcel if the school board placed it for public sale; no new purchase action was taken at this meeting.
