State oil and gas board's new rules for geologic carbon storage noted as effective Jan. 11, 2025
The State Oil and Gas Board has adopted comprehensive rules to oversee geologic storage of carbon dioxide in Alabama, and those rules include the board's current fee schedule, the state geologist told the working group.

"These rules are, comprehensive and they were, effective on, 01/11/2025," State Geologist Nick Kyu said. He told members the rules were based primarily on North Dakota's rules; North Dakota was the first state to receive EPA primacy for geologic storage of carbon dioxide, Kyu said.

Kyu said the board's rules were adapted to align with Alabama's Administrative Procedure Act and the administrative code of the State Oil and Gas Board. He offered to provide members copies of the rules and serve as a resource for technical or procedural questions as the subcommittees study permitting, regulation and fees.
