Administration reviewed the timeline for Early College High School (ECHS) planning and described a detour from the standalone facility concept presented in the bond toward repurposing existing facilities and pursuing partnerships with Austin Community College (ACC).
Staff said a December 2025 board direction to explore repurposing led to evaluating New Hope High School and ECHS colocation and exploring ACC Cypress Creek as a partner. District staff and community respondents emphasized what students value most about the program: ACC course access, proximity to college faculty and tutoring, and the small-school identity. “They really value the ACC connection, access to the college courses, the faculty, facilities,” a program lead summarized during the presentation.
Student speaker Patton Boyd, a junior at Leander ECHS, told trustees he and other students felt they had been informed late about relocation plans and called district communication “unclear” and insufficient. Board members pressed administration for clearer, regular community communications; administration acknowledged a lapse in summer outreach, apologized and said it would create a dedicated website and outreach cadence and form a design committee that includes parents and students. Staff estimated that an ECHS opening at a repurposed site would likely be later than New Hope’s schedule — possibly as late as August 2029 — because of permitting and programmatic constraints, and that community engagement and ACC coordination remain necessary next steps.
