Administration outlined the rationale for two bond-funded elementary campuses: Elementary 31 to add capacity and flexibility in the North (Tarvin/Parkside/Aiken attendance areas) and Elementary 32 to relocate Mason Elementary to a centrally positioned prototype campus closer to Treviso growth. Staff presented demographic maps, capacity projections and a five-year enrollment outlook and said each site is part of the 2023 voter-approved bond program.
Officials said the 31 site ties to county road improvements (Hero Way) that must align with the school’s construction timeline; Elementary 32 relocates the Mason community intact to a new facility, which staff argued would improve educational adequacy and reduce student bus time. Administration estimated a potential savings of roughly three bus routes (about $200,000 annually) and fewer long special-education trips if the Mason community is moved to 32.
Trustees questioned whether changing demographic projections or charter openings should delay construction, how staffing and ongoing operating costs would be handled, whether alternative uses of existing campuses could reduce new construction, and how the 10-year Leander ISD 2037 planning process will coordinate feeder patterns districtwide. Administration said the projects are in schematic or permitting stages and that staff will return with comparative cost analyses, projected operating impacts and detailed transportation modeling.
