The King County Bar Association hosted a virtual Supreme Court candidate forum in which 10 candidates answered KCBA and audience questions on judicial philosophy, court administration and access to justice. Bridgette Schuster, KCBA member services director, opened the event and Sydney Tribe moderated; the forum included one-minute introductions and two-minute answers followed by audience Q&A.
Candidates repeatedly emphasized access to justice and the administrative role of the court as central campaign issues. Justice Colleen Melody, a recent appointee running to retain position 1, described the court's role as ‘‘interpreting the law contextually’’ and said judges should consider legislative intent and the practical impacts of interpretations. Judge Sean O'Donnell and others voiced concern about recent Supreme Court actions affecting public-defense caseload standards and urged coordination with the legislature to secure funding and implementation plans.
The audience asked about disability access, the Office of Public Defense's decision around the Washington Appellate Project (an ongoing litigation matter) and proposals to supplement or replace the bar-exam pathway. Candidates voiced broad support for exploring alternative admission pathways such as APR 6 and portfolio-based licensing while stressing the need to protect competence and the public. The forum concluded with closing statements urging voters to research candidates' records before the November election.
