Shelly Izzano, executive director of Hampton Bay Days, told the council the 2009 event prioritized family-friendly programming and environmental education. "Bay Days coordinated efforts to support Clean the Bay Day on 06/06/2009 and, as a result, removed 625 pounds of trash and debris from waterways in Downtown Hampton," she said, noting partnerships with groups including the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation, Wyland Foundation and Chesapeake Bay Foundation.
Izzano outlined changes for 2009 that included removing a commercial carnival to free up downtown space and boost family activities, and a vendor breakdown showing 23 vendors from Hampton Roads, 13 from Richmond and surrounding areas and 37 from out of state. She said Bay Days also supports local charities, which on average raise more than $10,000 through festival activity.
Councilors pressed staff for follow-up materials and additional data. Mitch Ross asked about minority participation among vendors; Izzano responded that the organizers do not collect demographic data on vendor race and that applications are open to all. Councilmember Carney and other councilors also asked for the event slides and the vendor list, which staff said are included in the council packet and can be made available electronically.
