Mayor George Wallace opened a spotlight recognizing local residents and businesses, and the council honored Hampton native Boo Williams for his contributions to youth basketball and community development.
A city presenter outlined Williams’s career: standout seasons at Phoebus High School and Saint Joseph’s University, induction into collegiate halls of fame and the founding in 1982 of the Boo Williams Summer League, which the presenter described as among the nation’s largest AAU organizations. The presenter also noted Williams built the 135,000-square-foot Boo Williams Sportsplex, which drew about 96,000 attendees and generated over 32,000 hotel-room nights in its first year, according to the city presentation.
Williams came forward to accept the recognition and thanked Mayor Wallace and the council. "Thank you," he said, acknowledging the city’s role in supporting local sports and youth development. The council thanked Williams for the national spotlight he has brought to Hampton and for mentoring thousands of student athletes.
The recognition concluded without formal action; the meeting moved on to other business.
