State Senator John Miller read Senate Joint Resolution No. 417 on Oct. 26, 2011, commending Hardy W. Cash Sr. for 63 years of service to the City of Hampton.
"Whereas, Hardy W. Cash senior has retired after 63 years serving the city of Hampton in various government staff positions under nine city managers," Miller read, citing Cash's roles as administrative assistant to the county manager, purchasing agent, zoning administrator and ombudsman, and noting his founding of Hampton Bay Days and work on the mayor's civic improvement awards program. The resolution was prepared for presentation by the clerk of the Virginia Senate as an expression of the General Assembly's gratitude.
Cash, who joined the city workforce in 1947 at age 19, accepted the recognition from the council. "If I had it all to do over again, I'd apply for a job with the city and do it all over again," he said, thanking the council and citizens. He acknowledged colleagues who were not yet born when he began his career and expressed appreciation for the support he received while serving Hampton.
The recognition was presented in a Spotlight on Citizens session that also included awards to local businesses and a separate city resolution. The council recessed for a reception and said the meeting would resume at 6:15 p.m. to begin the public comment period.
