Hampton City Council on Oct. 26, 2011, adopted a resolution recognizing Angela Lee Leary for her years of civic service. The proclamation recited Leary’s biography, including her birthdate (April 8, 1942), education at Churchland High School, her tenure on city council from July 1, 2004, to Oct. 11, 2011, and her work on local boards and committees.
Councilman Spencer moved to approve the resolution and a second was recorded though the seconding speaker’s name is not specified in the transcript. The clerk then recorded unanimous ‘aye’ votes from Councilmembers Carney, Moffatt, Spencer, Stewart, Tuck, Vice Mayor Wallace and Mayor Molly Joseph Ward; the motion carried and the resolution was adopted.
Leary spoke after the adoption, thanking the mayor, council members, City Manager Bunting and city staff, and the citizens of Hampton for the opportunity to serve. "I've enjoyed every moment of being in public office. It's been an honor to represent you," she said, adding she plans to continue serving the community in other ways.
Charlotte Dillo, executive director of HELP (Hampton Roads Ecumenical Lodgings and Provisions, Inc.), presented a certificate recognizing Leary for outstanding contributions to HELP programming, noting Leary’s work supporting homeless veterans and large donations of clothing and pantry items. Eddie Deerfield, president of the Buckroe Improvement League, also presented remarks and expressed appreciation on behalf of neighborhood residents.
The council recessed for refreshments and photographs; the public comment period was scheduled to begin at 6:15 p.m.
