Library facilities staff updated the board on Cleveland Riley branch flood remediation and temporary services, saying a burst pipe during winter storms caused water damage and mold risk that forced closure and removal of the collection.
"During those 3 days, a pipe burst at the Cleveland Riley branch library and flooded the library... we lost the entire collection because of concerns about mold," staff (S5) said, describing in‑house remediation work on flooring and walls and noting that furniture and materials were put into storage pending insurance evaluation. Staff estimated the collection replacement at about $250,000 and said the city has requested an advance payment from the insurer to fund replacements.
While the main building remains closed, the Cleveland Riley Rec Center next door has provided a room for a small, temporary library with public‑access computers, a limited collection and programming. Staff and the Friends group have raised community support; staff reported roughly $25,000 in community donations earmarked for Cleveland Riley that will be applied to the full reopening when insurance determinations permit.
Staff emphasized that reopening the full branch depends on insurance timing and the insurer’s discretion about advance payments; they said the community’s interim service helps but is not a substitute for the full facility.
