The El Paso City Council presented a proclamation honoring Sgt. Jose Luis Magdaleno for his Vietnam‑era service and for a recent Department of the Army verification awarding him the Purple Heart for wounds sustained in May 1968.
Representative Limon read the proclamation recounting Sgt. Magdaleno’s active duty beginning in December 1965, deployments to Fort Bliss and Fort Gordon, and service with Company D, 4th Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment. The proclamation lists awards and notes a historical correction that verified his entitlement to the Purple Heart. Sgt. Magdaleno addressed the council and said the recognition was uplifting after decades of having the injury go unrecognized: “Back in the old days, when we came back from Vietnam, we were being called ugly names. But now after things change, I'm being honored today, and I really appreciate it,” he said.
Council and veterans’ officials in the audience thanked Sgt. Magdaleno and his family. The recognition was ceremonial and intended to honor his service and community contributions.
