Cindy Ming presented a memo summarizing county vehicle and building damages from the April 15 hailstorm. She told commissioners that two municipalities (Paola and Osawatomie) were affected and that county departments had 32 vehicles with hail damage; insurance has categorized 16 as totaled under its 75% fair-market threshold for salvage. Ming said departments will have discretion for minor repairs but recommended selling or removing some older, high‑mileage vehicles from service when insurance proceeds are received.
Ming described the insurance process: if repair costs exceed approximately 75% of a vehicle's fair-market value, insurers deem the vehicle totaled; the county may choose to keep vehicles but drop them to liability coverage rather than comp/collision. She said the county has been quick to address safety-critical repairs and that vehicle payouts would be placed in an insurance-escrow-type account to cover future replacements or repairs. Ming cited an estimated $310,000 in insured damages so far and said commissioners would be asked to consider property/roof claims and building-repair proposals at a later meeting when engineering reports are complete.
