Stockbridge's newly appointed project manager, Brandon Rogers, presented a study of potential sites for a multipurpose recreation center and said staff recommends Option 1 — a roughly 6-acre tract on North Henry Boulevard at Burke Street — as the preferred location for a building sized for growth and downtown connectivity.
"Staff... is leaning towards option number 1, which is the Henry Boulevard at Burke Street option," Rogers said while summarizing prior studies and public meetings that considered expansion potential and parking needs. Council members from multiple districts discussed trade-offs between a smaller neighborhood-focused site and the larger downtown option; they emphasized connectivity to trails, parking expansion and future growth. After discussion the council voted unanimously to advance Option 1 and directed staff to return with site designs and community engagement plans.
Council said the decision aims to remove uncertainty that has delayed project momentum and to allow design work and a request-for-proposals process to proceed. Staff noted funding sources already identified (bond proceeds and prior voter-authorized allocations) and said further design steps and public meetings would follow.
