DSHS staff presented county‑level provider coverage analysis and identified significant gaps in certain service types that could constrain beneficiaries’ access to covered services.
Elena Tortellat said for a majority of service types the provider network is adequate in at least 80% of counties, but she identified specific services with lower coverage rates. "There are still a few service types where we see significant gaps," Tortellat said, naming adult day services, adult family homes, assisted living, care transition coordination, nursing homes and nurse delegation as services with county coverage below 50% in many cases.
Staff described steps to address gaps: expanded provider recruitment, provider support sessions, targeted outreach through area agencies on aging and tribal policy specialists, and a newly created provider access and engagement team. Upcoming efforts include conference participation, direct provider engagement and evaluation of alternative service delivery options to expand access in rural and underserved counties.
Commissioners asked that staff continue to track provider preauthorizations and geographic distribution as enrollment grows and to report back on the success of recruitment activities.
