The Extension Council presented an overview of countywide services and asked the Jefferson County Council for supplemental funding to sustain operations and expand a youth program. The council's presenter said university staffing support for those programs amounts to about $650,000 annually and that, "what we're asking are the county is additional $100,000 to help with the YPA program," which the presenter identified as a priority. The presenter also asked for an additional $10,000 to cover rising operating expenses.
The presenters described a mix of direct education (4-H, SNAP-Ed nutrition classes, school incubator/agriculture demonstrations), telehealth sites for residents without Internet access, and a "digital ambassador" program to teach Internet skills. John, identified as the family nutrition coordinator, described local impacts, saying his program purchased about $3,000 of infrastructure used to start or expand community gardens that feed local pantries.
Council members pressed for measures of return on investment and fundraising plans; presenters acknowledged that much of extension's value is hard to quantify and pointed to older university studies showing strong multipliers while promising to provide more recent impact examples on request. No formal vote occurred; the budget requests will be considered during the county's budget review process.
