Lashier Denton, who identified herself as a resident and caregiver, told council that paratransit service is creating hardships for disabled riders. "They're charged an exorbitant fee to go to each and every stop that they have to go to," Denton said, adding that riders must schedule precise pick-up windows and are sometimes left waiting without door knocks or shelter from heat.
The mayor acknowledged the concern and directed liaison follow-up: Vice Mayor Gray (the city’s HRT liaison) and assistant city manager Brian DiProfio were named as contacts to gather specifics and raise the issues with Hampton Roads Transit. The city manager said staff will fact-find about removed benches and shelters and report back to council. A representative noted the city’s disability committee meets regularly on paratransit topics and will bring concerns to those sessions.
