The Hampton City Council on a unanimous vote approved changing the name of the city’s Youth Violence Prevention Office to the Office of Youth and Young Adult Opportunities.
Councilwoman Snead moved the change, explaining that the office “serves youth plus young adults up to the age of 24,” and proposed the formal amendment. In the meeting, she put the motion on the floor: “So I'd like to put forth a formal motion, and I'd like to move that we approve item number 3 with the change in the name of the office from youth violence prevention office to office of youth and young adult opportunities.” The motion was seconded and the council recorded affirmative votes from the mayor and members present.
Supporters said the new title better matches the office’s clientele and outreach goals. The council adopted the change as a consent-item pull and completed the vote without further substantive debate. The measure carries no separate budget appropriation in the action that the council approved tonight.
Council members who voted in favor included Mayor Tuck, Vice Mayor Curtis, Councilman Gray, Councilman Moffitt, Councilwoman Schmidt and others present on the dais. The clerk recorded the vote as approved.
