The Douglas County Board of Equalization voted to grant seven late-filed Nebraska Disabled Veterans motor-vehicle tax and fee exemptions after hearing from an appellant and discussing problems tied to a new exemption process.
Chair Garcia opened the appeals item noting seven names on the list. Carl Auman, appearing on Zoom, said, “My appeal is in the letter. I'm just here to answer any questions, if anything anybody has any.” Commissioners and staff explained the exemption provision is new this year and that applications began arriving in July. Commissioner Borgeson said staff believed the change to the law caused the timing and processing issues and moved to grant the exemptions; the motion was seconded by Commissioner Rogers and passed 6–0. Commissioner Morgan told Auman, “I'll follow-up you after the meeting on what you need to do next,” indicating staff assistance would be provided to complete any remaining steps.
The board’s discussion focused on administrative timing rather than disputing applicants’ eligibility. Commissioners said although the filing window was missed, the applicants appeared to be eligible under the new law and merited relief because they are disabled veterans. The board did not vote on any policy change to the exemption process during the meeting.
