Head Start officials asked Hidalgo County Commissioners Court to reappoint and nominate five community representatives to the Head Start policy council and to authorize submission of FY2027 grant applications, including a one-time program improvement and health and safety request.
A Head Start presenter told the court that performance standards require commissioners to nominate community representatives (one per member) and that a council member is limited to a five-year term. The presenter asked the court to reappoint named individuals and to authorize submission of federal and state grant applications to support meals and other program needs.
The presenter also requested permission to submit a one-time program improvement and health and safety funding request in the amount of $9,241,243 to address facility upgrades, transportation needs, security, and other items not otherwise fundable within agency budgets. Commissioners moved to approve the nominations and to authorize submission and signature authority; motions carried.
Staff noted the documents need signatures by Oct. 1 to meet grant deadlines and asked the judge to sign the materials before adjournment.
