The Planning, Housing and Economic Development Committee of the Prince George's County Council voted to advance council bill CB 111 20 26 with no committee recommendation and scheduled a council day on the following Monday to continue stakeholder negotiations.
A council member who led the discussion framed the Sphere development as "one of the most important things to be contemplated from a development perspective, from an impact perspective, that we've seen this year," and said the committee wants "to bring every single stakeholder to the table" including minority-owned businesses (MBEs) and labor partners. The mover asked that the legislation be advanced without changes so the county and private partners could continue working line by line with stakeholders.
In explaining a vote, a committee member said their background in the labor movement informed their support: "I've spent, over a decade, in the labor movement ... we need to make sure that ... our labor voices are heard." The committee carried the motion 5-0. The meeting record notes the committee thanked the county executive's team and the Sphere project team for ongoing engagement.
