The Los Angeles City Council recognized September as National Service Dog Month and heard testimony from users and trainers about the independence service dogs provide.
Councilmember Lee said the month "gives us an opportunity not only to celebrate these incredible animals, but to also better understand and respect the important role that they play." Haley Rodriguez, a service‑dog recipient, told the council how her service dog Klondike increased her independence: "With him by my side, I have gained a greater sense of independence." She reminded the chamber that under the Americans with Disabilities Act service dogs "generally have access to places where the public is allowed to go."
A trainer demonstrated a dog in training, Jaeger, performing commands and described tasks the dogs learn—ignoring dropped food, closing drawers and tugging open doors or operating push plates—to assist people using wheelchairs. Councilmembers thanked Canine Companions, trainers, volunteers and recipient families and formally recognized the month.
