Citizens and nonprofit leaders told the commission they see both risks and benefits in a proposed DG Market near Mayport, and urged careful negotiation of terms and commitments before a sale or final approval.
Susan King, president and CEO of Feeding Northeast Florida, described regional food insecurity and said DG Markets can provide fresh produce and grocery staples where full-size grocers are not viable: "DG Market is not a typical Dollar General store... they are a mini grocery store," she said, urging the commission to seek written commitments on produce and stocking if staff pursues a sale. Other speakers raised concerns over site choice, distance from residents and potential loss of business for small local retailers; Sarah Boren and others asked why alternatives or partnerships had not been explored more thoroughly.
City Manager Kevin Hogancamp said the developer is still reviewing the purchase agreement and the item may return to the Oct. 12 meeting if the city receives finalized documents. Commissioners asked staff to continue community outreach and evaluate market demand and incentives before any further action.
