Several workshop speakers recounted the history of local conservation organizing—from early confrontations with oil and gas exploration to building volunteer groups that influenced local land outcomes. Speakers described how naive determination and grassroots tactics led to legal and political victories over time.
One participant who described organizing in East Glacier said the experience taught participants how to write letters, contact elected officials and sustain long‑term campaigns. "None of us knew anything about what to do," the speaker said of early organizers; he and others said that experience shows newcomers how to get involved and make a difference.
Organizers framed these stories as material for classroom lessons, with the dual aim of teaching conservation history and encouraging civic participation among students.
