Thrall Library outlines fall teen programs, seeks youth volunteers

Theresa Zacek, head of youth services at Middletown Thrall Public Library, told the Middletown Board of Education on Sept. 24 that the library is launching a Teen Advisory Action Committee to give students meaningful volunteer opportunities tied to community projects.

"We are getting a lot of requests for volunteer hours," Zacek said. "For those teens looking for actual volunteerism and community service, I've got the Teen Advisory Action Committee where they will be able to work with me to create a project that will help the Middletown community." She said the group's first meeting is Oct. 3 at 4 p.m., and she will sign off on volunteer credit for meeting attendance and project work.

Zacek described a range of programs for ages 0–18, from a graphic-novel book club and craft sessions to a science fair and family book clubs. She also highlighted Operation Warm, a partnership with IATSE Union providing brand-new coats for ages 2–18, with a library pickup day on Oct. 24.

Board members asked about language access and cultural programming for Hispanic families. Zacek said the library has Spanish-speaking staff and a tablet-based translation service to support outreach and events. Superintendent Amy Creedon thanked the library and said the district will help publicize programs through scholar-board representatives and school offices.

The board did not take action on the presentation. The library packet and contact information were provided to trustees and available through the district for families seeking program details.
