Laurel introduced a supported employment program intended to create meaningful, paid work opportunities for individuals with disabilities, aligning with October's Disability Employment Awareness Month. Officials said the program gives participants hands-on experience and pathways to city employment.
Malcolm Lee, a 31-year-old production assistant with autism who started as a volunteer eight months ago, described his work editing video and serving as a floor director and camera operator: "I'm ready." He told the segment he hopes the city will continue hiring others who are autistic or who have other disabilities.
Mayor Keith Sidnor said the initiative is part of a broader inclusivity goal: "My whole administration, I wanna make everybody inclusive. I wanna take care of everybody and put folks..." Officials noted the program builds skills and real-world experience, and that the city values contributions from employees with disabilities.
