The Laurel MultiService Center, marking community outreach around World Homeless Day, outlined services for people experiencing homelessness including mobile dental services, hot meals, transitional housing with sleeping and hygiene facilities, and planned community events. Officials said last year more than 13,000 people in Laurel received help at the center.
Anthony Lombardo, who said he experienced homelessness after a medical setback and formerly worked as a paramedic firefighter, called the center "a lifesaver," describing access to showers, laundry and meals as crucial to his recovery. Human Services Director Marchelle LeBlanc spoke about the center's role in connecting people to resources and the planned day of service and community luncheon ahead of World Homeless Day.
Staff framed the day as an opportunity to highlight "the people behind the statistics" and to advocate for improved policies and funding. The MultiService Center will host awareness activities and community support efforts in the week of World Homeless Day.
