District staff presented a recommendation to modernize BISD's student and staff devices: iPads for pre-K–2, MacBook Neos for grades 3–12 and teacher devices, and a device-management and warranty strategy (Jamf + AppleCare) that includes in-house repair training and a buyback approach to offset future refresh costs. Presenters said 14,585 devices would be covered under the plan and showed a combined four‑year cost estimate of roughly $11,000,000 with an estimated annual payment of about $2,800,000 under the proposed financing.
The presentation framed the modernization as a response to an aging Chromebook fleet: the district reported over 6,642 device repairs last year and annual device repair expenditures approaching $470,000 (parts, shipping and repair services) plus overtime. Staff discussed tradeoffs among platforms, vendor buyback values (district Chromebooks estimated at a maximum $10 in perfect condition, MacBook Neos estimated buyback $180–$250 in four years per vendor quote) and the expected operational benefits of device management, faster repairs and reduced downtime. Administration asked the board to consider a financing package and approved terms would be captured through the action process; in this meeting the presentation was informational and staff answered questions about funding sources, staffing for repairs and the district's procurement and financing plan.
