Council approved Sept. 15 an amendment to the city's agreement with Blue Line Solutions for automated speed enforcement near the city schools that reflects changes in state law.
Staff explained the amendment responds to legislative changes: existing contracts may run through 2028, but any extension beyond that point could require a public referendum. The proposed amendment empowers the mayor, council and city manager to review the program annually and decide whether to re-engage or renew contract terms. "This was actually the compromise that the general assembly came up with..." a staff member said, summarizing the legal context. Council approved the amendment by voice vote.
Officials said the change allows the city annual discretion over whether to continue the automated enforcement program and preserves the city's ability to honor current contracts through 2028 without triggering an immediate referendum.
