Council members discussed public concern following a town hall about planned surgical-service transfers at local hospitals. A committee member introduced the item saying the town hall raised concerns that surgical services would move from Belleview Women's Center to Ellis (now part of a larger health system), and urged the council to consider a resolution in support of keeping services in the city.
Speakers were divided. One council member said she was not in favor of a resolution, citing hospital financial pressures and the risk of losing Ellis entirely: "I
on't support having that kind of a resolution... I don't want to lose Ellis hospital," the member said. Another council member framed the issue around patient access and staff testimony: "People's health is also impacted by this... the nurses are talking about how this impacts them," a speaker said, urging the council to prioritize clinical access over cost-efficiency arguments.
The initiating council member said hospital leadership had told her that affected nurses were offered positions at Ellis. Other members suggested inviting representatives from the hospital system and nurses' groups to brief the council; a motion to introduce a supporting resolution was made but failed for lack of a second. The committee agreed to seek additional information before advancing a resolution to the full council.
