Mayor Daria Develin publicly recognized the City of Erie Department of Public Works Wednesday for what she called "outstanding service" during and after the Sept. 2–3 severe storm.
At the start of the council meeting Develin invited public-works leadership — including Director Jason Sers and named assistant directors and bureau chiefs — to the stage and read a formal commendation praising long hours clearing roadways, removing hazards, assisting residents and restoring safe neighborhoods. She singled out the department’s GIS mapping support as a rapid innovation that let crews prioritize blocked streets and power outages in real time.
"Their tireless work and commitment to caring for our community are a true testament to what it means to be a public servant," the written commendation read. Council members and audience members applauded as the department accepted the recognition.
The mayor also mentioned mutual aid from nearby municipalities, offers of food and support from local businesses, and volunteer efforts. Director Jason Sers and bureau chiefs were asked to come forward to accept the award on behalf of the crews.
