Softlanding Missoula marks 10th anniversary with Stories of Home screening and panel

Softlanding Missoula opened its 10th-anniversary Stories of Home event with music and a screening of a short documentary featuring local newcomers, then hosted an in-person panel in which participants shared arrival experiences and reflections on making Missoula home.

"I'm Mary Pool. I'm the executive director of Softlanding Missoula," said Pool in her opening remarks, thanking partners and introducing panelists and the evening's program. The screening and conversation highlighted how newcomers cope with cultural shock—speakers repeatedly cited surprise at Missoula's snow and rapid seasonal darkness—while crediting local residents and programs for practical help.

The panel included musicians, cooks and students who described using food, dance and sport to build social ties. Omar Keta, a musician from Guinea, described his early years in Missoula and invited the public to upcoming performances; another panelist, Wakati Makonga, said soccer helped him connect and prepare for college. Organizers thanked MCAT for recording and a small production team for filming the documentary.

Organizers said the event aimed to amplify voices that “often go unheard,” and panelists urged continued welcome and small acts of support—help with driving, language learning, and social connection—rather than large new programs. The evening closed with applause and thanks to volunteers and partners.
