TxDOT district staff (Jose Vargas) told the policy committee the district currently has about $790 million in active construction covering 21 projects, including full reconstructions, widenings, bridges and safety work. Among the largest projects, Vargas reported the US‑59 expansion is a $244 million contract with GM Construction Group and is about 46% complete; the district also highlighted a $122 million SH‑84 reconstruction (about 72% complete) and the near‑completion of the FM‑359 widening (reported at roughly 94% complete with main lanes open to traffic).
"We have 790 million on active construction projects," Jose Vargas said during the update, describing the portfolio's scope. He also detailed schedule expectations—US‑59 is estimated for completion by the end of 2029, SH‑84 construction is tracking ahead of schedule with a contract date in fall 2027, and crews are preparing traffic switches and continuing pedestrian‑facility work. Committee members asked about funding for southern overpasses and staff emphasized that getting projects shovel‑ready improves chances of securing additional funds.
