Dr. Richard Monk, Sylvania's representative on the Toledo-Lucas County Board of Health, told council the department has acquired and is renovating a former commercial building (the 'Dasis' building) to replace an aging, costly facility. "That building was basically condemned about five years ago but continued to struggle along," Monk said, and the new site will provide better office space and parking for staff.
Monk also described a federal grant initiative he said will direct funding to the region: "the Great Health uh of America initiative ... is going to distribute over a two-year period ... $32 million to four states ... and the city of Sylvania are going to be the recipients of ... $4 million each," he said. At the same time, Monk warned of an immediate fiscal pressure: Lucas County presented the health department with about a $1 million insurance bill this year to cover concentrated medical claims in a small number of employees, and he said that figure could rise to roughly $2 million in 2027, which may force staffing reductions and reduce grant competitiveness.
Monk encouraged council to participate in a community-health assessment and said the department will invite local officials to a ribbon-cutting once renovations are complete. He said staff anticipate the new facility will be ready in late October or early November.
