A Trousdale County high-school student was recognized at the board meeting after being named a national FFA agricultural science fair finalist.
Matthew Neighbors, a freshman representing Charlesdale County High School FFA, told trustees his project surveyed producers about farmland loss and found that while many respondents expected substantial land conversion, his sample showed about 24% reported significant non‑agricultural loss; he said respondents expressed mixed views about encouraging the next generation to farm. Neighbors said the loss of topsoil and farmland could increase food costs if farmland is paved over.
Board members praised Neighbors for his research and civic involvement; trustees reminded the student of upcoming district-level events and congratulated him on advancing to the national FFA convention in Indianapolis on Oct. 22. Administrators noted FFA field trips and related activities approved in the consent agenda.
The recognition was listed as the district’s monthly highlight and officials encouraged other students and parents to attend the announced events.
