A district presenter reviewed Cedar Hill ISD’s annual recommendations for credit-by-exam and exams for acceleration and asked the board to approve the policy framework.
The presenter explained a key distinction: “So the big difference is credit by exam needs a 70%. Exam for acceleration needs an 80%.” The staff said credit-by-exam is intended for students who have already taken a course and can demonstrate proficiency, while exams for acceleration are for scholars seeking to move up a grade level without having taken the intervening course.
Officials said the district will use vendor assessments—Texas Tech and University of Texas credit-by-exam products for elementary grades, University of Texas exams for acceleration in middle grades, and College Board AP/CLEP options for secondary credit—applying the 70%/80% thresholds by section rather than averages.
The presenter walked trustees through windows and timelines, noting fall 2026 transitions and that students who have already taken a course would use the 70% threshold for credit-by-exam while those moving into new content must meet 80% on each section.
Trustees did not take a separate vote on the policy at the presentation stage and asked staff to bring any remaining implementation guidance and schedule details when the board considers the item for approval in a future meeting.
