Administration presented a request to approve a class-size reduction waiver for any pre-K through 4th‑grade classroom that exceeds the statutory 22:1 student-to-teacher ratio and provided a campus-by-campus enrollment breakdown.
The presenter explained the waiver mechanics and showed per-campus counts (examples cited included Plummer kindergarten sections averaging 48–49 co-enrolled and Collegiate Prep sections with multiple sections at higher enrollment levels). Staff said that where classes exceed the 22:1 ratio the district will provide additional adult support (aides/paraprofessionals) and is actively hiring to split large rooms: “So the principals are being strategic in how they provide the support,” staff said.
Several trustees pressed for clarity on how early-literacy guardrails will be protected when class sizes are higher; staff replied that aides may rotate and principals will be strategic in scheduling and use of supplemental adults. One trustee emphasized the need to ensure aides are present during small-group reading instruction so student outcomes are protected.
A motion to approve the class-size reduction waiver for pre-K through 4th grade was moved, seconded, and approved unanimously.
