The Board of Public Works voted to establish a no-parking zone on the 400 block of 12th Street North after staff said the rebuilt street is too narrow for parking.
Jackson, a city staff member, said the block had a partial vacation and 'the resulting street width is less than 29 feet, which is, the minimum street width required for parking on at least 1 side of the street.' He told the board the street was built 'as approved by the private developer.'
Council members asked how the reconstruction was approved at the narrower width. Director Goner said the street design and vacation were discussed at design review meetings and compared the work to prior reconstruction on Hagar Street, noting the choice to build a narrower section and to omit parking there. Mayor (chair) expressed concern about spillover parking into residential areas, saying he had received complaints from neighbors about college-student parking.
A motion to adopt the finding to establish the no-parking zone was moved and seconded, and the board voted to approve the measure. Meeting minutes record the passage but do not list individual vote tallies.
